Bio-fuel, Solar Cooking and Water Filtration Systems

The primary means of fuel in Kolir is firewood. There are many health issues which stem from using firewood, as well as the intense environmental degredation caused by harvesting the firewood. The area is already depleted in trees, and women must often travel long distances to find new sources of wood.

In an effort to improve the health of the community as well as instill a mentality of environmental conservation, we are introducing bio-fuel making systems.

These systems can turn any solid bio-mass waste into long-burning charcoal. They are simple to make and can become income generating activities for the families which we help, as they can easily turn the waste from their gardens into a sustainable fuel source to be sold to neighbors in their area.

We are also planning to train people in making easy and affordable solar cookers from found objects. These will be used to boil water, and to cook time and fuel consuming foods such as beans. and reduce on the need for charcoal and firewood, making smoke inhalation sickness also reduce.

Typhoid, diarrhea, and Bilharzia are common water-borne illnesses found in the area. This is due to unsafe water sources.

With the bio-fuel we make, we can also make bio-char water filtration systems. These are low-cost systems that require no electricty, and thoroughly filter out all bacteria and protozea, making purified drinking water.
